The HR Generalist provides leadership and support in all functional areas including recruitment, safety, onboarding, wellness, retention, benefits, employee relations, performance management, and other HR related matters. In cooperation with Corporate Human Resources, serves as a strategic and tactical business partner to the Distribution Center team striving to drive, improve, and support processes and procedures.   Communicates and provides effective support of Hillman’s strategic plan with accurate, consistent, and timely delivery of programs and initiatives. Effectively coaches, trains, and makes sound recommendations for Management and Distribution Center employees acting as a resource for all matters related to employment and safety.


Key Result Areas (KRAs):

1. Recruiting and Staffing

  • Provide effective recruiting strategies for exempt and non-exempt positions and partner with management to identify staffing needs to determine the most effective means to fill open positions.
  • Coordinate and post job openings with appropriate sources. Review applications/resumes and refer qualified candidates to hiring management.
  • Effectively communicate with candidates to schedule, interview and hire.
  • Administer all new hire orientations and paperwork.
  • Introduce and encourage employees to be engaged in company initiatives.
  • Manages all aspects of relationships with approved temporary staffing agencies.

2. Employee Relations


  • Provide guidance on employee issues. Make recommendations to management and employees in accordance with applicable State/ Federal laws and Hillman polices/procedures.
  • Effectively address employee relations issues by conducting comprehensive investigations with sound appropriate resolutions in partnership with Management and Corporate Human Resources.
  • Promote employee engagement initiatives to encourage open-door relationship between employees and management.
  • Present a positive image in employee/client/customer relations in all interactions with employees or visitors.
  • Maintain integrity and confidentiality of department and employee personnel information.
  • In cooperation with Corporate Human Resources coordinate, schedule, and support all Wellness program events administering and reporting on program functions.  

3.   Safety

  • In partnership with line and Safety management, lead and support safety initiatives and processes that drive towards zero recordable injuries.
  • Conduct and process safety observations and facility audits. Uses data from observations to predict or prevent future safety incidents.
  • Effectively shares incident analysis results company-wide as appropriate to minimize risk of reoccurrence.
  • Administer and document training curriculum and safety awareness information with managers and employees.
  • Provide safety training to new hires and existing staff.
  • Participate with management to investigate incidents, define corrective actions and follow-up to ensure all corrective actions are implemented and sustainable.
  • Effectively communicate Safety strategy and performance to employees and engage them in the process.
  • Serves as liaison and knowledge center to facility safety committee, providing ongoing education and support.   4.   HR Initiatives
  • In partnership with Corporate Human Resources, provide proactive HR support and execution in all business initiatives.
  • Research and provide input of HR products and processes to suggest better ways HR tasks can become more efficient and improve HR established practices.
  • Develop and analyze HR metrics from ATS and HRIS systems.
  • Collaborate with the Distribution Manager to drive community involvement activities and to ensure coordination and continuity of administration of HR policies, programs, activities and events.
  • Play an active role in coordinating all employee activities and support site initiatives to encourage an engaged workforce.
  • Share best practices and ideas with HR counterparts to drive consistency and continuous process improvement.



Associate degree or the equivalent in education and experience. Bachelor degree preferred.


  • Four years human resources experience


    • Bilingual in English/Spanish
  • Specific knowledge of related employment laws
  • Knowledge of safety programs
  • Intermediate skills relating to Word, Excel, and Windows applications
  • Knowledge of HRIS software
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and vendors and deal tactfully with the public
  • Strong presentation skills – able to conduct meetings and training sessions in front of a group
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail; Able to handle multiple priorities and deadlines


  • Strong writing skills – able to generate clear, accurate correspondence
  • Able to address and resolve employee issues and conflict with diplomacy. Able to maintain confidential information
  • Able to work occasional early evenings to support second shift
  • PHR (or SPHR-CP) Certification a plus
