  • Overview

    Acts as a Leader within the Purchasing department and procures a variety of complex raw materials, supplies, and services to support production requirements and ensure optimum inventory investment.



    Research and Locate Sources for Goods and Services

    • Researches and locates sources for new goods.
    • Evaluates quotes and selects suppliers.
    • Negotiates with suppliers to secure appropriate cost, schedule, quality, payment, and delivery terms.
    • Continually seeks improved sources for materials, supplies, and services.
    • Purchases goods from international suppliers.
    • Assists Engineering staff with the development of new products by locating suppliers and obtaining samples.    

    Analyze Supply Chain Management requirement 


    • Reviews sales forecasts, production schedules, and manufacturing history to determine material requirements for designated items.
    • Consults the automated planning system to make a variety of planning and purchasing decisions.
    • Determines reorder points for non-Material Requirement Planning (MRP) items.
    • Tracks manufacturing and inventory activity and works with Hillman staff to minimize inventory levels and costs.
    • Works with Hillman staff to outline cost, quality, and delivery specifications for new items.

    Purchase Goods and Services

    • Generates and places purchase orders for a variety of goods. Follows up with suppliers and Hillman staff to ensure required delivery.
    • Accurately documents all transactions in the automated purchasing system.
    • Orders maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) materials as needed.
    • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with suppliers.  Monitors supplier performance and addresses issues as needed.    

    Back-up and Training


    • Serves as a back up to the Purchasing Manager to approve purchase orders over $10,000.
    • Serves as a strong leader within the purchasing group; assists with guidance and training new staff.    

    Special Activities and Teams

    • Participation in Hillman’s Continuous Improvement processes.
    • Knowledge of import paperwork as required by US customs.
    • Works with Hillman staff to develop solutions for receiving, accounts payable, discrepant material, and engineering issues.
    • Participates in the Material Review Board committee.
    • Maintains a current knowledge of company products, manufacturing operations, and market trends.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.



    • Bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain management, or equivalent required.



    • ISM and/or APICS involvement strongly preferred.
    • Seven years of experience purchasing a broad range of materials, supplies, and services, with heavy emphasis on electro-mechanical commodities.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of automated production and inventory control, purchasing, and MRP systems (Oracle Enterprise 1).
    • Comprehensive knowledge of statistical process control, supplier management, supplier certification, and product data management multi-level Bill of Material concepts.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Office applications (Excel, Word, Access)
    • Excellent analytical, negotiation, interpersonal, and communication skills.
    • Strong technical aptitude – able to understand basic engineering drawings and specifications.
    • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement processes.
